Based on a true story that took place during the reign of Louis XV, the «Pacte des Loups» recounts an unusual French myth – the «Beast from Gévaudan» that claimed more than one hundred victims, killing them under mysterious circumstances.

The year is 1766 -- the peasants of Gévaudan are wracked with terror. The rocky countryside is often shrouded in fog, and of late, blood curdling screams pierce the air… A beast is on the rampage. Killing women and children, it rips its victims to shreds and literally tears off their faces… Hunting groups are organized to track the beast down and spectacular chases ensue… However, they prove to be useless because the Beast miraculously disappears every time it is cornered. It continues to wreak havoc. Could it be a werewolf? Nobody can believe this. Fears are running high and it is the subject on everybody’s lips. Not knowing what to think, people believe it is a curse… a monster from Hell… a scourge sent down by God!

The news has reached Louis XV’s court and everybody is talking about it at Versailles as well. The King is growing impatient with the whole affair and decides to send Grégoire de Fronsac, a man of the enlightenment and an excellent scientist, to Gévaudan to investigate the situation. Accompanied by Manu, his strange and taciturn companion, they find the people in the region completely distraught.

Fronsac is unrelenting in his investigation. The beast exists, this is a fact… But what is its true nature? Is there someone manipulating its actions? Who would benefit from its ravages? Is it a curse or some cruel machinations?

In order to get to the bottom of this mystery, Fronsac will have to rely on the aid of the young Marquis d’Apcher, an enlightened aristocrat, Sylvia, a bewitching young Italian courtesan and her clever ruses, and Marianne de Morangias, the girl who has captured his heart…
