Spring 1945: Eleven-year-old Felix lives with his mother Anna in Munich. His father Bernd, a well-known trumpeter, is at the front. When bombardments of the city do not stop, Anna and Felix flee to the countryside. They set up a new home on the farm of a deceased aunt. There Felix discovers a mysterious room full of sparkling shards of glass, where he can withdraw and forget the everyday brutality of war. In the village he quickly makes friends with Karri, Martha and refugee boy Tofan. Karri is the son of Johann Feik, the local group leader, who has imposed a strict Nazi regime. Karri usually walks around in his Hitler Youth uniform, plays “western front” or “urban warfare” with Felix and the other children and subjects them to dangerous tests of courage. More and more Felix gets into conflicts. On the one hand, out of concern for his father, he and Martha write a letter to Adolf Hitler telling him to stop the war. On the other hand, he emulates Karri and increasingly believes in the “final victory” and all the Nazi slogans. Until one day his father Bernd comes knocking at their door – totally emaciated and ragged ...
