When Emma, a shy 15-year-old, takes up equestrian vaulting with a team of girls of her own age, she is taken under the wing of her slightly older peer Cassandra, who offers to help Emma even though they are competing for the privilege of representing the team at an upcoming meet. Their relationship is symbiotic. Emma admires Cassandra’s strength and poise, while Cassandra in turn silently desires more than just Emma’s discipline. The psychological stakes of their friendship intensify along with their rivalry. Meanwhile, Emma’s curious and innocent eight-year-old sister Sara also finds herself in the uncharted territory of sexuality and womanhood.

“Delivering one of the most intense and complex feature debuts to come from Sweden since Lukas Moodyson’s “Show Me Love” helmer Lisa Aschan thrillingly subverts the coming-of-age genre, political correctness, gender roles and (without ever becoming graphic) just about everything to do with the depiction of developing sexuality in the taboobreaking SHE MONKEYS.”
