Human Rights Day Free Special Screening with Discussion

In December, we commemorate the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Estonian Refugee Council invites everyone to celebrate this significant milestone and, at the same time, express solidarity with those who have been forcibly displaced from their homes and whose human rights have been violated.

We will watch the award-winning documentary "Shadow Game," which follows the journey of underage refugees arriving in Europe, and engage in a discussion with experts on the future of human rights in the 21st century. The panel discussion following the film will feature insights fromUljana Ponomarjova (Lawyer specializing in refugee issues at the Estonian Human Rights Centre), and Indrek Juss (Chief Specialist on Foreign Minors at the Social Insurance Board). The panel will be moderated by Mirjam Rennit, specialist in education and awareness programs at the Estonian Refugee Council.

"Shadow Game" (Eefje Blankevoort and Els van Driel, 2021) is a gripping documentary depicting the consequences of Europe's border and asylum policies through the eyes of teenagers fleeing armed conflicts. Fences, discrimination, and unimaginable conditions—bordering European countries have made seeking asylum nearly impossible in a humane way. Despite numerous obstacles, underage refugees embark on perilous journeys, risking their lives for safety and a better future.

The film will be screened with Estonian subtitles.
