Linn da Quebrada, Jup do Bairro

Linn da Quebrada is a black trans woman who together with her friend Jup do Bairro puts on provocative musical shows in order to draw attention to topics such as transgender people and homosexuality. The film explores the issue of whether the social expectations regarding gender should be allowed to deprive some of love and the opportunity to feel good in one’s own body. Racism, poverty, and the widespread machismo attitude in Brazil cannot break Linn’s spirit and lust for life. Through home videos we come to understand that even a painful cancer treatment could not rob Linn of her vitality. Via her radio and musical shows and through the conversations with close ones the film reveals Linn’s interest in questions such as what is it that separates us and can gender be reduced to genitalia or does there exist a chance to understand gender as a process.
