I Space Dogs I

Laika, a stray dog, was the first living being to be sent into space, and thus to a certain death. A legend says that she returned to Earth as a ghost and still roams the streets of Moscow. And so this outstanding documentary follows the dogs in the streets of the Russian capital, leaving the anthropocentric gaze behind and its will to create „heroic“ or „safe“ images.

Instead director Elsa Kremser and Levin Peter combine historic material of „Space Dogs“ and their preparations to be shot to space for humankind with new material at street level documenting the lives of dogs – including some images that could be shocking for some viewers. For others, this Austrian-German coproduction heads into new documentary territory altogether.
