In animation screenings, the order usually starts from the more narrative film specimens and progresses to more experimental, non-linear examples of filmmaking. We decided to do the reverse.

Fine, experimental animation films, filled with tension and observation in the grand scheme of things, give way to intimate, personal character portraits until we reach a person’s own mind. They transport us from Mexico to the big screen, they multiply personal universes when necessary, they invite us to dance, and they disrupt the balance between the big and the small. Sometimes, it’s better to think about, judge, and enjoy things without any prerequisites.

Director: Nikki Schuster

Austria

Year: 2018

Film duration: 00:07

The viewer awakens as if inside a restless dream, transformed into a strange vermin. The camera assumes the perspective of an insect burrowing through the dark, crumbling underground, kindred to the community of beetles swarming under the idyllic, green façade of the lawn in David Lynch´s famous opening sequence of Blue Velvet. However, this is no straightforward soil.

tx-reverse

Director: Martin Reinhart

Austria

Year: 2019

Film duration: 00:05

Welcome to a 360-degree-panorama recording of a movie theatre, Babylon cinema in Berlin, filled with viewers. By means of the tx-transform technique, which Martin Reinhart developed more than twenty years ago, the space and time axes of a recording are interchanged. The frame, if there is one in the digital world, shows the complete length in terms of time of each recording, but only a fraction of the space. It is thus precisely the opposite of what we are accustomed to – where all is completely logical and entirely subordinate to the well-known laws of physics. But what does that look like?

This film focuses on the story of a woman whose fears and obsessions are taking over her everyday routine, transforming her life into an all-embracing jungle. It symbolizes struggles with personality disorders while being in a relationship. It's a visual analysis of separation anxiety disorder that occurs mostly in childhood but can also appear later. When the woman is left alone for a longer period of time than usual, her paranoia grows. She becomes suspicious, insanely jealous and fearful. This leads to the creation of a new reality, much more vibrant and colourful than her everyday life. It shows how subconsciousness can be dangerous and unpredictable; fierceness exists in the deep, mysterious jungle.
