PÖFF 2016: Grand Competition II

Suur võistlusprogramm II 2016

Genre

Animation

Run time

1h 1min

For the first time in the 18-year history of the festival, the selection of films for the main competition was not dependent on the tastes of one person, but instead, the selection was made by a 3-member jury. While choosing the main competition programme, the jury treated each film as an artistic whole, drawing their assessments from the quality of each individual film.

SORE EYES FOR INFINITY

Finland 2016, 12’

Dir: Elli Vuorinen

Prod: Terhi Väänänen

The optician grows tired of seeing the world too clearly and her inevitable involvement in its defects.

LEAD IN THE HEAD

France 2016, 8’

Dir: Aurore Peuffier

Prod: Olivier Chantriaux

A wolf is taken down and brought back to the village as a trophy. But the animal is not dead and the bullet lodged in its skull has repercussions on its psyche.

ANALYSIS PARALYSIS

Switzerland 2016, 9’

Dir: Anete Melece

Prod: Gabriela Bloch Steinmann

In the park, Anton is looking for someone to play chess with. The gardener is looking for a mysterious serial vandal. Perhaps they are both looking for the same thing?

L'ALFABETO DELLE COSE PICCOLE

Austria, Italy 2015, 4’

Dir: Linda Wolfsgruber, Federica Pagnucco, Thomas Renoldner

Prod: Thomas Renoldner

An animated book about the alphabet, where many small things are moving along with the music: jumping, trembling, dancing, whistling and inviting the spectator to participate.

EMPTY SPACE

Estonia 2016, 10’

Dir: Ülo Pikkov

Prod: Kerdi Oengo

The film invokes a past memory; an apartment that once existed; and a small girl dwelling and playing there. It presents a story forged in the dreams of a father hiding from Soviet terror. It is a reconstruction of a vision, with a backdrop of the anxieties present in 1950s Soviet Union.

CHATEAU AU GO GO

USA 2016, 4’

Dir: Steve Gentile

Prod: Steve Gentile

A kinetic romp that investigates the images imprinted onto wine corks. This animated, macro-photographed film becomes a sort of frenetic history lesson that alludes to the human impulse to tame nature.

SATIE’S PARADE

Japan 2015, 14’

Dir: Koji Yamamura

Prod: Koji Yamamura

A parade for three managers and four performers. Mixing quotes from French composer Erik Satie’s essays with the ballet music “Parade,” this film is an animated re-creation of “realist ballet” images going beyond reality.
