In 1990, a Soviet policeman, Sergei Toropsai, had a sudden religious epiphany. Its message was mind-boggling: Sergei was the reincarnation of Jesus Christ. The collapse of the Soviet Union soon followed, leaving millions of communism’s acolytes into a spiritual vacuum. Sergei, now calling himself Vissarion, soon gained thousands of followers. The mystical leader urged them to join him in building a community in a secluded corner of Siberia. There, they would live together farming the land and serving God. Drinking of alcohol and eating of animals would not be allowed.

Christ Lives in Siberia is a fascinating cross-section of life within a new religious community. The film depicts everyday life in the cult in the middle of Siberian wilderness. The crowds travel wooded paths to hear the sermons of their Messiah, singing His praises. The children go to the local school, learning the wise words of Vissarion. Ordinary people describe how they found their way into the community led by Vissarion. Finally, the reincarnation of Christ himself emerges in front of the camera.
