A healthy dose of nostalgia and poignancy transitions into a trip to the Eastern European past and present. But what matters here is how animation filmmakers fashion their topics into learning lessons, a deeply immersive look at the environment, or a transformation of popular folktales into an impressionistic play. It is never easy to tread on the footsteps of others, whether they are people, regional histories or plain wilderness, but it is always telling to recreate and redefine your own place – over and over again.
